Papers of the McNeir family [manuscript], 1846-1883.

The collection contains 11 letters, 1846-1847, between Joseph McNeir, a soldier with the Maryland Volunteer Battalion during the Mexican War and his family in Annapolis. Topics include the voyage to Mexico; speculation about General Zachary Taylor's plans; the march through Matamoros to Camargo; occupation of Monterrey; and the march under General David E. Twiggs through Victoria to Tampico. He also mentions scarcity of water; a controversy over the removal of a popular colonel; rumors of an attack on Saltillo and Twiggs' response; the loss of scouts and stragglers; Taylor's farewell to his troops; and the soldiers' pet parrots and chihuahua dogs. The bulk of the collection consists of family letters, 1883 May to July, to George and Meda Burrows McNeir who were visiting relatives in Michigan and Minnesota including Senator Julius Caesar Burrows. The letters convey news of family and friends in Washington, D.C., particularly the activities of Katie and William McNeir who worked as government clerks. Of interest are letters mentioning Senator Burrows, a Grand Army of the Republic parade, and black civil service candidates.
