Papers of William Cox Holmes [manuscript], 1861-1916.

The Civil War diary of Holmes, a University of Virginia alumnus begins August 6, 1861 and concludes May 28, 1864 when he was wounded near New Hope Church, Georgia. Of interest are his descriptions of his first camp at Memphis and mustering into the army; the siege of Corinth, 1862; Grant's advance into Mississippi and skirmishes with the Union army, October to December, 1862; a review by Jefferson Davis, December, 1862; the Battle of Bakin's Creek, May, 1863; the retreat from Jackson, Mississippi, July 1863; the retreat before Sherman's Mississippi raid, February 1864; J.E. Johnston's victory over Sherman, May 1864; and Sherman's march through Georgia, May 1864. The diary also contains Holmes's 1909 war reminiscences. With the diary are related items including muster rolls, a military pass, two Texas treasury warrants, poems, addresses and other Civil War memorabilia.
