Papers, 1953-1990 [manuscript].

The collection contains correspondence, articles, newsclippings, press releases, poetry, awards and pamphlets by or pertaining to Flakne. Most pertain to conservation in Northern Virginia and Alaska, the University of Alaska, the women's suffrage movement, ERA and women's rights. There are copies of letters to prominent national and state politicians and one from Senator Bob Bartlett of Alaska. In addition there are three videotapes and one sound tape on Flakne including a "Voice of America" interview on Micronesia.

Joseph T. Flakne (1900-1999) was known as a conservationalist, environmentalist, and activist for women's rights. Born and raised in Minnesota, he arrived in Alaska in 1929. There he attended the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines (now University of Alaska Fairbanks). Majoring in business administration and agriculture, he graduated in 1934.
