The papers consist chiefly of letters to Bettie, of Spring Hill, Fluvanna County, from family and friends. They convey local and family news, and discuss fashions, beaux, church services, school, and the death of a young friend. There are letters, 1853, from emigrants to North Carolina and Arkansas describing their new locales and an 1852 letter discussing Fluvanna politics and the state Whig convention and mentioning Richard Ivanhoe Cocke. Correspondents include members of the Boston, Couty, Crowder, Fontaine, Gilliam, Haden, Hughes, Jones, Payne, Seay, Shepherd, and Strange families. There are also Fluvanna election tickets, 1887, a Montgomery Ward and Co. catalog, 1910, and a letter, 1947 January 13, Edward Reilly Stettinius to Robert S. Pace regarding sitting for a portrait by Alfred Jonniaux, as well as three Jonniaux exhibition catalogs.
