Mrs. Thomas Baxter Gresham, daughter of Joseph E. Johnston, based this journal on extracts from diaries regarding the Civil War and its personalities, which she kept as a girl. She begins the journal with the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and records the capture of Jefferson Davis, Johnston's surrender, the trial and execution of the Lincoln conspirators and her first meeting with the great men of the Confederacy. The journal also contains newspaper clippings and cartes-de-visite of John Wilkes Booth, Lewis Payne, the chair in which Lincoln was shot, and a patriotic image of George Washington greeting Lincoln in heaven.
