Papers of Louis I. Jaffe [manuscript], 1917-1919.

Jaffe's diaries, 1918 March 29 to 1919 June 8, record his experiences serving with 649th Aero Supply Squadron, U. S. Signal Corps, American Expeditionary Forces in France, 1918, and as a member of the staff of the American Red Cross Commission to the Balkans, 1919. He describes the voyage to France; duty at Is-sur-Tille, Dijon; Armistice celebrations; Woodrow Wilson in France; travel through Italy and Greece; post-war military duties; work with the Red Cross commission; and inspection tours of Red Cross facilities in Serbia, Montenegro, Yugoslavia and Albania; descriptions of war-torn countryside and Red Cross hospitals, clinics and food distribution centers in Monastir, Gevelija, Vardar, Vranja, Leskovatz, Pirot, Cuprija, Belgrade, Sarajevo, Cetinje, Podgorica, Niksic, Kolachin, and Scutari. With these are fifteen photographs of Jaffe and comrades in United States training camps and France.
