Correspondence, financial and legal papers. The collection contains the business papers, 1807-1838, of James White, leaser and operator of the King salt works, Saltville, Washington County, Virginia, especially an account of balances on the books, 1820-1838; and scattered legal papers re the works including items concerning the estate of owner William King. There are also papers re cotton shipments, and from the settlement of White's estate, 1838-1878. The latter includes slave and land inventories, and a record of property divisions. White family correspondence contains a series of letters from Thomas Wilson White to William Young Conn White re the management of the family plantation "Bellefonte" near Huntsville, Alabama. Other topics of interest in the letters include slavery, banking and finances, and cotton prices. Legal, business and miscellaneous papers of the White family include an indenture re the saltworks; land grants; a speech about Judge Peter Johnson; a medical account of Dr. Alexander Preston noting treatment of slaves; continued family holdings in the King Saltworks, later the Holston Salt and Plaster Company; and interest in several lead mines, 1874-1881, including the Austinville Lead Mining Company, the Union Lead Mining Company, and the Wythe Lead and Zinc Mine Company. Some papers re the law practice, 1888-1911, of White and Buchanan, Abingdon, Virginia, are also present. There are a few papers of the Campbell family, 1853-1882, and some of the Robertson family, particularly Powhatan Robertson including essays written at William and Mary, ca. 1815-1816, and travel diaries and letters, 1818-1819, from a European tour. Other Robertson family correspondence includes Civil War letters mentioning John Pelham, John Mosby, skirmishes, a Union attempt to capture the saltworks at Abingdon, roving bands of pillagers immediately after the war, and Reconstruction.

John Pelham, an Anniston, Ala., native, attended the U.S. Military Academy until the Civil War broke out in 1861. He served with distinction as an artillerist for General J.E.B. Stuart's cavalry at the battles of First Bull Run, Second Bull Run, Antietam, and Fredericksburg. He was killed at the age of 24 at the Battle of Kelly's Ford in 1863.
