Letter to Governor T.C. Reynolds [manuscript], 1864 June 18.

In the letter (1864 June 18, Richmond, Va.) to Reynolds at Marshall, Texas, Johnston refers to Reynolds's appointment of a "Senator Lewis," regretting that the latter cannot be freed from a northern prison. He goes on to remark on the demoralized state of the Union army and the opportunity this offers the Confederacy to strike "vigorous blows." Topics also include fighting at Germanna Ford and Petersburg, and the capture of several hundred enemy troops. Johnston expresses his confidence in a Confederate victory, states his hope that the Confederacy will always remain a constitutional republic, and calls for patience, hope, and fidelity in anticipation of brighter days.
