Charles Samaran est né à Cravencères-l’Hôpital (Gers) le 28 octobre 1879. Après des études secondaires au Lycée d’Auch (Gers), il entre à l’École des chartes, où en 1901, il soutient sa thèse sur la maison d’Armagnac ; puis il poursuit ses études à la faculté de lettres de Paris et à l’École pratique des hautes études ainsi qu’à l’École française de Rome.
