Bailey; and a letter, 1896 June 29, to Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward thanking her for a letter, check, and copies of "The Independent."

Born Mary Gray, she changed her name to Elizabeth Stuart to honor her mother after her death, and began publishing stories, essays, and poems, eventually publishing fifty books and countless articles.
