The collection consists chiefly of material generated by Harry Byrd Jr.'s re-election campaigns of 1970 and 1976, including reports to voters on the issues, press releases, position briefs, sample campaign literature, speeches, files on opposition candidates Ray L. Garland and Elmo R. Zumwalt, voter surveys and statistics, campaign financial papers and organization plans. Of interest is a group of letters concerning the 1966 defeat of Congressman Howard Worth Smith. Correspondents include Armistead L. Boothe and J. Philip Reberger.
