Enterprise Engine & Machinery Company was started in San Francisco (circa 1881) by a German immigrant, Henry Martens. At first, Martens and his two business partners, H.W. Heany and A. Anderson primarily supplied castings for gold mining machinery and other industrial equipment which included compression cylinder castings for large engines.
