Hall's letters to his friend Matthew White, an editor of Argosy-All Story, a New York City magazine, describe the disasters, difficulties, weather, and working conditions in Loace, Portuguese Angola, where Hall was Managing Engineer for the Companhia de Diamantes de Angola. His proposed book contains chapters devoted to the Batchak, an African tribe, their social life, customs, and language and to wildlife in the area, snakes, and hippopotami in particular.
