Alexander Hutchison fonds. [1965-1985].

The fonds consists of correspondence with George Woodcock, editor of "Canadian Literature" in 1971, re his submission of a review of Robin Skelton's poetry, plus a first draft of the review; correspondence with Rampant Lions Press (Will and Sebastian Carter), 1976-1977, regarding the printing of a collection of Hutchison's broadsides, plus copies of the broadsides; manuscripts, correspondence, artwork, notebooks, research materials and miscellaneous [This large collection (1996-020) is only roughly sorted and is on loan]. Notable correspondence includes George Woodcock, Susan Musgrave, Dennis Brown and the Rampant Lion Press.

Alexander ("Sandy") Hutchison was born in Buckie, Scotland. He moved to Canada in 1966, after graduating from Aberdeen University, in order to teach in the English department at the University of Victoria, Victoria, B.C. (UVic). While on leave of absence from UVic to enter a doctoral program at Northwestern University, he received an Academy of American Poets prize in 1970. George Woodcock was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was raised and educated in England where, in the late 1930s, he met many members of London's literary circle including Dylan Thomas, Roy Campbell, Herbert Read and George Orwell. Woodcock returned to Canada in 1949 and joined UBC's Department of English seven years later. Rampant Lions Press (1949-2008) was a fine letterpress printing firm founded by Will Carter (1912-2001) and continued by his son Sebastian (b. 1941). Based in Cambridge, UK, the fine design and press skills of both Carters was highly esteemed by publishers who commissioned special editions and by collectors.
