The journal contains debit and credit entries for 1851 and manager journal entries for work at Locust Grove Plantation, 1853. There are several accounts for the hiring of slaves. Other entries concern the hiring of a horse and cart, the hauling of lumber (including loads to the University of Virginia), and purchases of bricks, meal, veal, corn, and wood. Among those having accounts with Sinclair are Eugene Davis and the Corporation of Charlottesville. The Locust Grove manager's journal includes entries on the weather; work accomplished at the farm, mill, and brickyard, with frequent mention of the laborer's name; and church attendance. Of interest is a note on shoes given to 15 named slaves on October 24th and the paying of named slaves their Christmas and extra work money on December 26th. Genealogical information on the St. Clair family, 1896, 1958, has been laid in the volume.
