Recordings of a public lecture by York University professor Engin Isin that took place Sept. 28, 2000 at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montréal. Isin looks at the political tensions between imperial governance and the drive to modernize in great cities like Prague and Vienna. Presented in the context of the exhibition "Shaping the Great City: Modern Architecture in Central Europe 1890-1937"/"L'idée de la grande ville: l'architecture moderne d'europe centrale 1890-1937" on view at the CCA May 24-Oct. 15, 2000.
