Mrs. Stebbins was born in Rochester, New York in 1905. She earned a B.A. from Smith College in 1927 and a B.S. in Library Science from Columbia University in 1936. She received an M.A. from New York University in 1953. Mrs. Stebbins began her library career at Rochester Public Library, 1927-31. She worked as assistant society editor on the Rochester Times-Union and Democrat and Chronicle, 1931-35. She was the first librarian of the Grolier Society, 1936-37.
