Paul T. Cherington papers, 1915-1942.

The collection consists of material related to marketing professor Paul T. Cherington's teaching, research, and professional activities, 1915-1942. The collection includes syllabi, student lists, speeches, articles, clippings, and correspondence that document marketing courses taught by Professor Cherington before World War I; and his subsequent career as marketing consultant, economist, and author. The collection also includes speeches and articles written while employed as Director of Research at the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency, 1929-1931; records from a business policy course taught at Stanford University Graduate School of Business, 1929; a scrapbook containing clippings relating to appearances and opinions of Cherington, 1937-1942; and an undated manuscript copy of "The Power and the Plans." Of interest is an unpublished draft of an article written by Cherington discussing Harvard Business School Dean Edwin Francis Gay's work with the Central Bureau of Planning and Statistics during World War I.

Paul T. Cherington organized and taught the first marketing courses at Harvard Business School from 1908-1919. Towards the end of World War I he worked in the Textile Section of the Division of Planning and Statistics and the United States Shipping Board.
