Scots-American composer and pianist Helen Hopekirk (1856-1945) was considered one of the great concert pianists of her generation. She taught at the New England Conservatory in Boston, and in 1900 she premiered her Piano Concerto in D with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The Out But Not Down Club (OBND) was the generous innovation created by Albert Blakeslee, Professor of Botany and Director of the Smith College Genetics Experiment Station, 1942-1954. When his wife Margaret Blakeslee died in 1947 he donated money to the college to create a memorial fund in her honor called "An Investment in Friendship" The memorial fund supports the activities of the OBND Club which primarily consist of several dinners each year featuring speakers on a wide variety of topics. Frances Hall Johnson, born in 1865, was a trained classical pianist who also taught music and was active in promoting musicians locally as well as bringing renowned performers to Hartford. In about 1892 she founded the Musical Club of Hartford, a venture which began on a small scale, with eight or so members meeting and entertaining one another at their homes.
