Correspondence to Morley Roberts, 1918-1942.

The correspondence appears to extend to the earliest acquaintance between Arthur Keith and Morley Roberts, with the first letters, in May to September 1918, referring to their having met and discussed scientific issues probably related to Roberts's paper Inhibition and the cardiac vagus. They quickly become friends, and the correspondence includes both personal aspects and evidence of their exchanges on scientific issues. Much of their relationship apparently comprised in-person meetings. They read each other's work in draft as well as published form. In 1920 Keith refers to his hopes for Roberts's Warfare and the Human Body; and in 1923 there are references to Roberts's taking pains over the revision of Keith's Huxley lecture. Keith discusses evolution and adaptation in his Huxley lecture when criticizing Roberts's chapter on Huxley's heterodoxy, in September 1929. Keith reviews Roberts's book The Serpent's Fang in 1930, and reads in proof Bio-Politics in 1937, and Behaviour of Nations in 1940. There are a few mentions of Morley Roberts's paintings (in 1919). The letters include affectionate references to Roberts's stepdaughter Naomi. Roberts's 2 letters in 1941 are written just after Naomi's death.
