Robert K. Hagel was born in Salmon, Idaho in 1941. From 1968-1970 Hagel was a television production executive for Screen Gems, working on "The Ugliest Girl in Town", "Three for Tahiti", and "The Johnnny Cash Show". In 1970, Columbia Pictures and Screen Gems combined to form the Burbank Studios. Hagel worked for Burbank Studios starting in 1971, as general manager. He then became CEO and later president.
