Orders to be observed by the clerks of Edw. Harley Esq., one of the Aud. of the Imprests, 1728 April 16.

The collection consists of a handwritten list of ten rules governing the conduct of clerks working in the office of Edward Harley; the list is signed by Harley, and dated 16 April 1728. The rules cover duties, responsibilities, and conduct, for example, specifying working hours as nine till one in the morning and three till seven in the evening.

Edward Harley was an English peer and politician. Born 7 June 1664 in Herefordshire, his father was a member of Parliament and his older brother, Robert, became the 1st Earl of Oxford. He consistently supported the political career of his brother, who was to become Minister of England. Edward himself served several terms in Parliament, and in 1703 became Auditor of the Imprest, a post he held until his death in 1735.
