General description of the collection: The Mabel R. Gillis papers contain correspondence, a certificate of appreciation, and several journal clippings. Gillis was the liaison between the 9th SvC and California state libraries from 24 December 1941 through May 1946. The correspondence includes letters to Xenophon P. Smith, 9th SvC head librarian regarding various activities. Activities include the hiring of local librarians, salary of those positions, information on the Victory Books Campaign, the CA Library Association's "Send Your Books to War" book drive, and lists of libraries in CA that are in the 9th SvC. At the time the 9th SvC covered Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Utah and Nevada. The journal clippings are a list of librarians in CA by county.
