Roy Jenkins, the son of a Welsh miner, won a scholarship to Oxford. During World War II he served as a codebreaker at Bletchley. After the war he joined the Labour Party. He was twice Home Secretary, was made Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1967, and on his political retirement, Chancellor of Oxford.
