These two collections document the activities of the American Federation of Labor from its founding in 1886 until the death of Samuel Gompers in 1924. Not included are records of federal labor unions and city centrals. The strength of the collection is its documentation of Gompers' own activities. Part 1 includes: A. Early Federation records (minutes of the Legislative Committee of the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions and the Executive Council of the AFL, 1881-1890; an account book, 1886-1890; and the papers of Gabriel Edmonston, 1881-1918); B. Executive Council records (minutes, 1893-1924; vote books, 1892-1924; and correspondence, 1901-1924); C. Files of the Office of the President (letterbooks, 1907-1924, and scrapbooks, 1886-1905); D. AFL-CIO microfilm files (documents pertinent to issues considered by AFL conventions, 1909-1925; correspondence and other documents relating to affiliates of the Federation, 1890-1948; correspondence and other documents relating to jurisdictional disputes involving affiliates, 1896-1924; and circular letters, news releases and conference minutes, 1906-1937.) Part 2 consists of the following: A. Files of the Office of the President (general correspondence, 1888-1937; speeches and writings, 1894-1925; conferences, 1901-1926 (including minutes, transcripts, proceedings and memoranda from formal conferences and conventions which Gompers attended, as well as informal meetings with individuals and small groups; hearings, 1899-1924 (transcripts of Gompers' testimony before congressional committees, the New York State Legislature, the U.S. Industrial Commission and the Industrial Relations Committee of the New York State Constitutional Convention); reference material, 1879-1936 (reports and studies, clippings, biographical sketches, resolutions, speeches and other documents); and appointment records, 1902-1924); B. National and International Unions correspondence, 1885-1911; C. Mining Department records, 1911-1915.
