Samuel James Arnold letters, 1812-1816.

Three letters: AL to Mr. Lapent, June 22, 1812, concerning a prohibition; AL[aman.]S to Mr. Lapent, June 6, 1816, serving as a cover letter for an address "to be spoken on the opening of the New Theatre Royal English Opera House"; ALS, September 11, 1816, concerning the production of a "Comick opera." Copy of letter, dated September 30, 1820, in hand of an amanuensis, which was supposedly written by R. Peale, according to a note penciled in at the bottom left hand corner of the letter and which was signed by H. Harris, Jason Winston (on the part of R.W. Elliston), D.E. Morris, and J. Winston, (on the part of Haymarket Theatre), concerning an unauthorized performance of "the play of the Mountaineers," which Arnold had advertised to be performed at his theatre on Tuesday, October 3, 1820.

Samuel James Arnold was a British dramatist and impresario who produced plays from 1794 at various London theatres. In 1809 he obtained permission to stage opera and other musical dramas at the Lyceum. In 1815 he obtained the lease, renamed it the English Opera House, and had the theatre almost completely rebuilt for 80,000 pounds. From the description of S.J. Arnold letter to C.
