Collection contains original letters, Photostats of letters, and typed transcripts of the letters pertaining to the missionary work and government relations of the Indians. Letters are almost entirely to Jedidiah Morse. Folder 1: Handwritten guide to letters. Letters to Jedidiah Morse from: James Stacy, sent from Savannah, April 16, 1794; John Sergeant, sent from New Stockbridge, October 28, 1796, discussing the Oneida Indians; John Campbell, sent from Edinburgh, May 28, 1806, discussing schools and church; William Mathews, sent from Sandusky, March 18, 1811, discussing missionary work, Western Missionary Society, schools, Indian witchcraft. Folder 2: Letter to Jedediah Morse from: John Sergeant, sent from Vernon, October 20, 1819, discusses Eleazer Williams, Captain Hendrick Aupaumut, Delaware, Munsee and Oneida Indians and their feelings of having been deceived. Edwards, February 4, 1824, discusses General Van Rensselaer; George H. Richards, sent from Washington City, March 19, 1824; Joseph Nourse, sent from City of Washington, January 29 and April 19, 1824; D. Claus, sent from Niagara, September 12, 1821. Folder 6: Correspondence from the Museum of the American Indian and the Katonah Gallery about the loan of Stockbridge Indian pieces for an exhibit. Letters are part of the Stockbridge Indian papers.
