Jonathan Richardson drawings, [ca. 1734-1888].

Drawings mounted on paper on numbered leaves, including a self-portrait of Richardson (leaf 1), and portraits of John Milton (leaves 2-8), Alexander Pope (9-23), Annibale Carracci (24), more self-portraits (25-29), and portraits of Jonathan Richardson the younger (30-38). Hinged onto the front pastedown is a manuscript note by Samuel Hibbert-Ware concerning both Richardsons. On the verso is a pencil note (by Titus Herbert Hibbert-Ware?) concerning Richardson the elder. On the leaf preceding the first drawing, recto and verso, is a signed note by Titus Herbert Hibbert-Ware concerning the history of the volume. On the verso of the first drawing is a short poem, dated April 12, 1732, in the hand of Richardson the elder. At the back of the volume are two Twickenham Museum circulars concerning the commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Alexander Pope's birth, and three autograph letters to T. Hibbert-Ware: the first from Henry Richard Tedder, dated July 18, 1888, requesting loan of the drawings; the second and third from Edwin Maynard, July 21 and August 8, 1888, acknowledging receipt and announcing the return of the drawings. These are followed by a printed notice of the Pope Museum from the Athenaeum, Aug. 11, 1888. Bound in full late 18th-century crimson straight-grain morocco, panelled in blind and gilt, with contrasting spine label and marbled endpapers.

1 v. (50 leaves) ; 23 cm.
