Environmental review files, 1994-1997.

The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) is responsible for authorizing the destruction of structures in Michigan when federal funds are going to be used for the demolition. This authorization process is called an Environmental Review (ER) and a Historic American Engineering Report (HAER). A small percentage of the ER applications include structures that have historical significance. If the structure has historical significance, the SHPO encourages its owner to rehabilitate the property or sell it to someone else who can. If the structure is eventually destroyed, this ER documentation becomes an important part of its history. The ER file contains description of the structure, some maps, architectural drawings, and photographs. The material is organized by Environmental Review number.
