Diary of Henry Sudweeks, 1871.

Typescript of Henry Sudweeks' diary, kept from September 9 to November 7, 1871. In the diary Sudweeks writes of his daily activities at St. George, Utah, as well as of the building of the St. George Temple. The diary also includes newspaper extracts relating to the St. George Temple from 1873-1878, including its dedication, construction, and use, and with the complete dedication remarks of Brigham Young and John Taylor. The typescript also contains an annotated biography of Sudweeks by his grandson Joseph Sudweeks, as well as biographies of Sarah Sweet Sudweeks (1826-1911) and of Laban Morrill (1814-1900), also by Joseph Sudweeks. Includes a table of contents and name index. Bound.

Henry Sudweeks was born in Isle of Grain, England, on September 11, 1815. After serving in the British navy, he arrived in New York in 1837 and in 1838 moved to Illinois. Sudweeks married Sarah Sweet in 1843, and the couple were baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1852. In 1853 they traveled to Salt Lake City with the Saint Louis Company under Captain Moses Clawson, and settled in Nephi, Utah, in 1857.
