French Revolution pamphlets on assignats, 1789-[ca. 1797].

Pamphlets, some undated, concerning assignats, paper money issued by the French government during the Revolution. The pamphlets deal with the question of paper money vs. metallic money, and document the steep inflation and deepening economic crisis which attended the use of "assignats" as the national currency. Included are pamphlets arguing for and against the use of "assignats," including a debate between Nicolas Bergasse and Anne-Pierre Montesquiou-Fezensac; and discussions of how "assignats" were to be issued and of the problem of counterfeiting. Included is a 1796 pamphlet listing the value of the "assignats" each month from 1789-1794 and each day from March 1795-June 1796. Authors include, in addition to those named above, Antoine-François, marquis de Bertrand de Moleville; Etienne Clavière; William Playfair; Jean-Barthélemy Lecouteulx de Canteleu; and the president of the Imprimerie Nationale.
