Two letters declining dinner invitations. In the first one (undated), Bourgeois declines because of distaste for the hypocrisy of the other guests, who he fears will do to (the memory of) general Louis-Lazare Hoche what they did to Roget. In the second letter, dated June 18, 1899 from Versailles, Bourgeois declines the invitation because of a family gathering, but suggests that a toast to the French army be given, and discusses Hoche's significance as a symbol important for France's morale since its defeat in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870.
