Edgar J. Heher oral history, 1963-1964.

In this interview, Mr. Heher discusses the New York State food processing industry. Topics include: his experiences as a fieldman, salesman and canning plant manager; the establishment of freezing plants in New York and other states; the effect of labor unions on the industry; his experiences employing Cattaraugus Indians at the New York State Canners, Inc. plant located on the Indian reservation in Irving, N.Y. and his observations about the eventual transfer of that cannery to the Indians; his impressions of why the food processing industry was leaving New York; competition in catchup and the rise of the tomato processing business in California; technological developments in the frozen food industry; his impressions of the New York State Canners and Freezers Association and of the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station. Included as an appendix is a 2 page tribute to Mr. Heher which was written when he retired from Birdseye in 1963.
