Frank Turek oral history, 1965-1968.

In this interview, Frank Turek shares his obsevations of the New York State sugar beet industry. Topics include: his association with the Redevelopment Area Organization of Cayuga County (N.Y.) and the effort to obtain a sugar beet allotment for Cayuga County, including the hiring of Charles Brannon, former Secretary of Agriculture, to advocate the allotment before the USDA; the formation of the Finger Lakes Sugar Beet Growers Association; his impressions of the New York State College of Agriculture's contributions to the industry; the use of Agway employees to encourage farmers to sign contracts with the Empire State Sugar Company; his reaction to C. DelMar Kearl's and the AMERICAN AGRICULTURIST's negative assessment of the feasibilty of establishing a sugar beet industry in New York; his impressions of the relationships between Empire Sugar and the growers association, including contract negotiations; his use of migrant labor to thin and weed beets; sources of information about beet production; and his impressions of F.H. Vahlsing, Jr. and the Maine Sugar Industries, D. Leo Hayes, Paul W. Lattimore, James B. Smith, Nathan Cohen, Charles Lavis, and Jack Klett.
