In this interview, James B. Smith discusses the New York State sugar beet industry. Topics include: the sequence of events leading to the production of sugar beets in Cayuga County, including the contributions of the Area Redevelopment Administration; contracting acreages, hiring fieldmen, and the priorities of the Empire State Sugar Company; his impressions of the Finger Lakes Sugar Beet Growers Association, including its secretaries D. Leo Hayes and Bernard Pooler; and his observations of the managers at Empire Sugar, especially Jack Klett.
