Harvey H. Smith oral history, 1968.

In this interview, Harvey H. Smith discusses the New York State sugar beet industry. Topics include: the activities and effectiveness of the Finger Lakes Sugar Beet Growers Association; the use of GLF (and later Agway) employees to encourage farmers to sign beet contracts; his impressions of the relationship between the Empire State Sugar Company and the growers association, including contract negotiations and the procurement of migrant labor; his assessment of the contributions of the New York State College of Agriculture to the New York State sugar beet industry. Also included are his impressions of Charles Lavis and C. DelMar Kearl.

Founded in Syracuse, N.Y. in 1921 as a business run by farmers for their benefit. A. Leal Bibbins built the Syracuse seeds division into one of the largest seed businesses in the country.
