In this interview, D. Leo Hayes shares his impressions of the New York State sugar beet industry. Topics include: sugar beet field experiments conducted by the New York State College of Agriculture; the formation of the Finger Lakes Sugar Beet Growers Association; efforts by Empire State Sugar Company, the growers association, and GLF (later Agway) to encourage farmers to sign contracts with the refinery; and the relationship between officials at the refinery and the directors of the growers association. Also included are his impressions of Henry Stack, Paul W. Lattimore, Frank Turek, James B. Smith, Charles Lavis, James Garlick, and the Cayuga County Chamber of Commerce and the Redevelopment Area Organziation of Cayuga County, N.Y.

Founded in Syracuse, N.Y. in 1921 as a business run by farmers for their benefit. A. Leal Bibbins built the Syracuse seeds division into one of the largest seed businesses in the country.
