This interview covers John E. Baldwin's observations of the food processing industry with particular focus on the contributions of the Continental Can Company. Topics include: Mr. Baldwin's childhood and youth, including his World War II experiences; competition between the American Can Company and the Continental Can Company, especially in providing services such as credit, technical assistance, and can closing machinery; the effect of the Robinson-Patman Act in helping the Continental Can Company expand business; the effects of the Depression and World War II on the canning industry; handling customer complaints and management error; methods used to determine quantity of cans to be manufactured; the effect of vertical and horizontal integration on New York State canneries; the influence of A & P as a volume canner, retailer, and trend setter; expansion of the Continental Can Company into foreign countries; cooperation between Continental Can Company and canneries in product development; impressions of the New York State Canners and Freezers Association and of the National Canners; and changes in the manufacturing and shipment of new cans.
