James L. Rothwell oral history, 1964.

James L. Rothwell discusses his personal history and observations of the New York State food processing industry. Topics include: his childhood; student experiences, including conducting the New York State Dairy Survey with Leland Spencer; experiences in World War I; observations of relationship between processors and growers, use of credit by canners, lease of canning equipment with option to buy, and movement of canning industry out of New York State; advent of cost accounting, especially as introduced by Wayne Mayhew; water acquisition and sewage disposal in canning plants; effect of growth of chain stores and government regulation on personnel policies; types of insurance used by canning industry; use of advertising by food processors; duties as director of several canning companies; associations with Victor Preserving Company, Olney and Carpenter, K.M. Davies Company, Smithfield Pure Food Company, Edgett-Burnham Company, and Fruit Belt Preserving Company. Includes impressions of: Helen Tobin, K.M.
