Frederick Webb Hodge was an ethnographer, archaeologist, editor and museum director. Hodge's first exposure to archaeology was as secretary of the Hemenway Southwestern Archaeological Expedition. When the project was over he returned to work at the Bureau of American Ethnology as Librarian. Adam Clark Vroman began to photograph around 1892, the same year he moved to Pasadena, California. As an amateur photographer and bookseller, Vroman traveled to the Southwest, especially New Mexico, to photograph in the American Indian pueblos. Vroman was one of the few photographers of the region who established a friendly relationship with his subjects beyond that of a curious tourist.
