All-girl bus tour of the American West, 1935.

Collection comprised of 3 scrapbooks containing Smith's 56 p. manuscript journal of her trip, 62 pamphlets, 76 photographs (many with typed descriptive captions), and 85 postcards, as well as other items such as newspaper clippings, dried flowers, tokens, and tickets. The collection documents a three-month bus tour of the American West taken in 1935 by Smith, a 23-year-old high school teacher from Sebring, Ohio, and a group of other young professional single women. The California portion of the tour included stops in San Francisco, Yosemite, Los Angeles, San Juan Capistrano, and other cities. The tour was a part of the "University of Tours"--a Summer travel program chaperoned by a male college professor, a principal driver, and a back-up driver. The 56 p. journal recounts the trip in daily entries and includes descriptions of interactions of the tourists with American Indians, as well as descriptions of towns and cities, and their inhabitants.
