California : or The gold seekers of the Sacramento, approximately 1849.

Collection consists of The mnemosynum, by John F. Ames (Utica, N.Y. : Orren Hutchinson, 1840), a guide on how to prepare and use a commonplace book, which, as originally published, includes 270 blank ruled pages at the end. Fifty-four of these blank pages have been used by Charles H. Haynes for writing out his translations into English of two tales by Eugène Sue, as well as Paul Duplessis' Les chercheurs d'or du Sacramento (Paris, 1849), a novella of the California Gold Rush. Haynes' English translation is apparently the first and only translation of Duplessis' work, which tells the story of an old Mexican miner, Rafael Quirino, in five chapters. The manuscript is illustrated by Haynes with small pen-and-ink drawings and decorative titles.
