It is apparent from Edward Garnett's first letter to Morley Roberts, dated 23 August 1922, that they met for the first time at the funeral of W. H. Hudson, with whom they were both close; in that letter, Garnett expresses openness to reading and commenting on the manuscript of the book that Roberts intended to write about Hudson. Topics of subsequent letters in 1922 and 1923 include: Garnett's thoughts about a posthumous work by Hudson (Ralph Herne) that Joseph Dent at Knopf was hoping to publish; an article Garnett was planning to write on Hudson, especially on the question of why Hudson's development as a nature writer came so late in his life; and Garnett's re-reading of letters he had from Hudson, of 1901-1922. In two letters in 1924, Garnett responds to Roberts's book on Hudson upon its publication, and comments concerning the reviews it was getting. He also calls attention to, and asks that Roberts correct what he says is an erroneous statement made by Roberts in the book, to the effect that Garnett had expressed to Hudson a desire to be his executor.
