Summary: This collection consists of selective letters sent from the Territory of Arizona to the U.S. Army Adjutant General's Office regarding events and activities between 1875 and 1884. Documents are copies printed from four reels of National Archives microfilm. Military subjects covered include reports on operations against Native American groups, mustering of Indian Scouts, routine post maintenance duties, activities of Army Officers acting as Indian agents, and acknowledgement of orders received for personnel. Additional topics of interest to researchers include military use of telegraph lines, reports on condition of Indian prisoners and transport to New Mexico, coordination with civilians in charge of agencies and Commissioner of Indian Affairs, personal actions & activities of officers and enlisted personnel, and civilian petitions regarding the Hualapai Indians for restriction to reservation. These include such diverse topics as Mariano Samaniego's adoption of an Apache girl, purchasing oxen for logging in the Graham Mountains to build Fort Grant, a petition by Mohave County citizens about the Hualapai Indians, inspection reports of ordnance stores, a claim of William Orndorff, telegraph repair work, removal of Apache prisoners from Ojo Caliente, N.M. to San Carlos, and the escape of Victorio and his band from Ojo Caliente.
