Logbook of an unnamed person, perhaps a scientist , or ship's master beginning on the H.M.S. Seahorse (according to Zacour-Hirsch Catalogue, the vessel is not named at the beginning of the log), an armed British vessel under the command of Captain Smith, leaving Spithead, 8 January 1761. The first five pages document a naval battle with a French 34-gun frigate Le Grand, after which the ship returns to Plymouth for repairs, and Captain Charles Cathcart Grant takes command of the ship. She sails from Plymouth on 5 February 1761 arriving at the Cape of Good Hope on 27 April 1761. Logbook continues with a voyage on the Mercury Snow under Captain Harrold from the Cape of Good Hope to St. Helena from 3 October 1761 to15 December 1761. The final leg of the journey is from St. Helena on the Prince Edward, East Indiaman, to Plymouth from 26 January 1762 to 3 April 1762, under the command of Captain James Haldane.

Richard Howe, Earl Howe, was born in London, England, on March 19, 1726, the son of Emanuel Scrope Howe (1699-1735) and Mary Sophia Charlotte von Kielmansegg (1703-1782).
