Frederick Zulch letters, 1893-1902.

Letters written to Zulch's sister, May Allen, and his brother-in-law George A. Allen, while Zulch was serving with the Navy as a plumber. He was on board the U.S.S. Atlanta from 1893-1895, the U.S.S. Monadnock in 1896, the U.S.S. Iowa from 1898-1899, and the U.S.S. Prairie and the U.S.S. Chicago. In 1983, he described a visit to Philadelphia while on shore leave. In 1895, on board the Atlanta, he visited the port of Colon, Columbia, and the ship anchored at Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Santiago de Cuba and Key West, Florida. He describes each location in great detail. Of interest is a letter written in 1896 in which he described his visit to an opium den in San Francisco. Zulch was aboard the Iowa when it saw action in the Spanish-American War. He described the Iowa's role in the destruction of the Spanish fleet at Havana, Cuba. During his later tours, Zulch visited Brazil, Uruguay, Peru, and Lower California, Mexico and later France, and always sent his sister descriptions of the areas.
