Sir Adolphus William Ward (1837-1924), historian, was born at Hampstead, Middlesex, on 2 December 1837. He was educated in Germany and Bury St Edmunds before entering Peterhouse, Cambridge, in 1855 (B.A., 1859; M.A., 1862), where he became a Fellow in 1862. He entered the Inner Temple in 1860, and was called to the bar in 1866, but never practised law. Ward was Professor of History and English Language and Literature at Owens College, Manchester, 1866-1897, and Vice-Chancellor, 1886-1890 and 189...
