The interview primarily concerns Pessin's involvement with FORTRAN and its development at IBM in the late 1950s. Topics include: preparation of FORTRAN for the IBM 650, the development of FORTRAN II for the IBM 7070, the attitudes and environment of the Applied Programming group at IBM in the late 1950s and early 1960s, variations in FORTRAN, and attempts at standardization. Pessin concludes with an assessment of John Backus' programming group at IBM and their contributions to the software industry.
