The collection comprises holograph and corrected typescripts and galley proofs, dummies, jacket proofs, photocopies of cover and frontispiece sketches, front matter copy, related notes and research material (including maps), correspondence, reviews, pictures and clippings. Non manuscript materials in the collection include O'Dell's acceptance speech for the Hans Christian Andersen Award (1972), an unnamed typescript, a holograph for an article, "Books Remembered" (The Calendar (Children's Book Council 1975, vol. 34:2), a copy of a book review of Cleveland Amory's Man Kind? For Psychology Today (1974), a large collection of correspondence, copies of reviews, the Scott O'Dell Scholarship announcement and correspondence, the press release announcing the creation of the Scott O'Dell Award for Historical Fiction. In addition there is correspondence relating to The Author's Guild in the "Kathleen Please Come Home" collection, a Houghton-Mifflin catalog in the "King's Fifth" collection (lists "Island), and correspondence relating to "Island" in the "Roll of Thunder" collection.

Scott O'Dell worked behind the camera for MGM and Paramount and as a book columnist and editor before becoming a full-time author of adult fiction in 1934. His first YA book, Island of the Blue Dolphins, won the 1961 Newberry. He also won several Newbery Honor Awards, the William Allen White, the Nene, the Jugendbuchpreis (twice), and was the second American to garner the Hans Christian Andersen medal.
