Davies describes computer projects at NPL, from the 1947 design work of Alan Turing to the development of the two ACE computers. He describes the magnetic delay line storage systems, the difficulties in implementing programming on the Pilot Model ACE, and some of its applications including aerodynamics and traffic control. Davies tells of the construction begun in 1955 of a much larger, second ACE, and the decision to contract with English Electric Company to build the DEUCE because of the technical problems they encountered. Davies argues that the DUECE was the first commercially produced computer in Great Britain.
